Pressure and Temperature Dependence of Viscosity of Volcanic Lava
نویسنده
چکیده
We consider a model of viscosity η of volcanic lavas. The equation, describes with high accuracy the existing experimental data on temperature and pressure dependence of viscosity of igneous materials. It is demonstrated that, the activation energy E(Tg) can be expressed through the glass transition temperature Tgo. The dependencies of the parameters of the viscosity equation are discussed for most of geoscientifically relevant systems. According to the model viscosity of lava depends on the depth inside the Earth through the temperature and pressure. Therefore, the viscosity of lava at the surface could be both lower and higher the one in the bowels of the earth, depending on the composition. This is of major importance for the volcano erruptions.

Silicic Volcanism on Io? Evidence from Tohil Mons and Other Possible Volcanic Cones
INTRODUCTION Recent volcanic activity of Io generally does not produce conical mountains. Instead, their lava run out in thin, long flows. Volcanic centers are typically large, deep calderas cut into the interpatera plains. Bright lava flows on Io can mostly be associated with sulfur lavas, with no visible escarpments that would indicate higher viscosity material. From temperature measurements ...

Abstract 1-Introduction Bazman volcano is located on Chgay - Makran magmatic arc. This magmatic arc with east-west trend is 500 km long and 150 km wide and extends from southeastern Iran to southwestern Pakistan. Early evolution of the Makran zone from the upper Oligocene to the upper Miocene is characterized by turbidite sediments deposited on the oceanic crust. There are several quaternary...
متن کاملSome first order observations on magma transfer from mantle wedge to upper crust at volcanic arcs
The viscosity of lavas erupted at volcanic arcs varies over orders of magnitude. A comparison of the relative abundance of viscous lava dome eruptions indicates that the average viscosity of arc lavas also varies considerably between arcs. It is shown that for continental or transitional arcs with little within-arc crustal deformation and without underlying slab windows or tears, average lava v...
متن کاملVolcanic sintering: Timescales of viscous densification and strength recovery
[1] Sintering and densification are ubiquitous processes influencing the emplacement of both effusive and explosive products of volcanic eruptions. Here we sinter ash-size fragments of a synthetic National Institute of Standards and Technology viscosity standard glass at temperatures at which the resultant melt has a viscosity of ∼108-109 Pa.s at 1bar to assess sintering dynamics under near-sur...

Introduction Damavand volcano is a large composite cone (≥ 400 km3) with height elevation (5678m) above sea level, in Central Alborz. This volcano consists of two buildings including old lavas between 1.8 to 0.8 Ma in the northern and eastern part of the current cone and young lavas with about 0.4 to 7 ka years in the south and west part. Trachytic and trachy-andesitic lavas are the most abund...
